Prof. Sauer is Professor at RWTH Aachen University, Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, Chair for Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Energy Storage since 2014.
He received his diploma in Physics from the University of Darmstadt in 1994 and his Ph.D. degree from Ulm University in 2003. From 1992 to 2003, he exercised scientific work at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Freiburg.
His team has currently about 55 full time scientists, engineers and technicians and additionally about 80 students working on their bachelor and master thesis or as student assistance. The main topics are all aspects on battery storage systems for mobile and stationary applications.
Prof. Sauer provides advice to the national government e.g. as a member of the national platform electro mobility and as a member of the scientific academy project “Energy systems for the future” as part of the dialog platform “ForschungsforumEnergiewende“. In addition, Prof. Sauer is a member of the scientific board of VGB Powertec (association of power plant operators), deputy speaker of the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA) for the section energy, and he is the scientific chair of the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES) since 2006 and (together with Prof. Winter) of the conference “Advanced Battery Technologies for Automobiles and Their Electric Power Grid Integration” since 2009. Prof. Sauer has published more than 350 papers and presentations in journals, books, conferences and seminars, among them 105 journal articles indexed in Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science.
