The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) is attached to the Regional Ministry of Employment, Industry and Trade of the Canary Islands Government. The main objectives of ITC’s Research and Technological Development Division are to encourage the industrial development of the Canary Islands in the fields of renewable energies, to promote the implementation of renewable energy systems in the Canary Islands, and to contribute to the internationalization of Canarias SME transferring the technology developed in the Canary Islands to neighboring less developed countries from North and western Africa). ITC works to maximize renewable energy sources (RES) penetration in insular systems. Of particular interest to ITC is the dynamic study of the grids (stability) towards increasing RES injection, the development of micro-/ and mini-grid concepts for urban or rural areas and even for entire islands (100% RES self-sufficiency models), and the development of specific energy-climate models to reliably predict wind or solar power production. ITC also supports the Canarian Government international cooperation policy by developing projects for electricity supply to African villages using RES. ITC’s expertise lays not only on electricity systems with “large-scale renewables”, but also on enabling methodologies that can be easily transferred to “small-scale renewables”.
